There are so many ways that our subconscious mind talks to us. Our subconscious is observing and absorbing information all the time, way more information than we can pick up on at the conscious level. It takes all that information, interprets it, and files it away. Sometimes there is information that the subconscious really wants our conscious mind to have and if we do not pick up on it consciously, that is when our subconscious has to find a way to get us that information.
It may try to get our attention in several different ways: through our dreams, through memories, thoughts, emotions, even physical ailments. Our dreams are a way for our subconscious to process and make sense of the things that go on in our waking life, but also a way for our subconscious to get our attention and let us know of concerns. Another form of communication is through memories and thoughts, especially when random memories or thoughts pop into your head. This is likely your subconscious trying to talk to you. Yet another form of subconscious communication is through emotions and through physical ailments and even pain.
Emotions are a prime way that the subconscious tries to communicate with us. Emotions are a lot more than reactions to the things we experience. They are there to help us understand the impact that our internal and external world is having on us and for the different parts of our mind and the different parts of ourselves to communicate with each other. Each emotion carries a different message for us. Many of those messages are unique to each individual but others are general, such as an intense feeling of fear.
Fear sends a clear message that our mind-body system has interpreted something in our environment as dangerous and wants us to respond in ways to keep ourselves safe. In extreme circumstances our mind-body system will take over and make decisions to keep us safe by using the fight or flight system. There are many circumstances that most everyone’s system is going to interpret as dangerous and send a fear message about, but there are some situations that the message of fear will be unique to each person. For example, almost everyone would receive a fear message if they smelled smoke or saw fire, but not everyone feels fear when they see a spider.
Emotions can be about immediate circumstances in our life or they can be about deeper issues that our subconscious is concerned about and wants us to pay attention to and address. Maybe it is about a relationship that is becoming problematic, a job that is no longer serving your best interests, or a choice you have made that is not in your best interest. The subconscious will then send out emotions to try to get your attention such as feeling resistance or displeasure about getting up and going to work. When this happens once maybe you did not get enough sleep but when it happens day after day after day, maybe it is your subconscious trying to communicate with you that this is no longer the right job for you.
Physical ailments as a form of communication can work on several different levels. Your muscles being achy may be telling you that you are straining yourself and working too hard. Your stomach hurting may be telling you that you are hungry or that something that you ate did not agree with your body. Your head hurting could be telling you all kinds of different things from it being too noisy, to lack of sleep, to being sick. The body is communicating with us all the time.
The subconscious mind may also be communicating with us through the body. The idea that physical ailments and pain could be a way of the subconscious communicating with us may be a new idea for you. However, it is not a new concept. There have been many people who have studied the idea in depth such as Louise Hay and Julia Cannon. They have both even put out books on the idea, complete with lists of what various ailments are communicating. Both discuss how physical issues can be a form of communication, for example, according to Louise Hay the back represents the support of life so problems with the back could be trying to communicate a lack of support.
Now that you know all the different ways your subconscious is trying to send you messages it will be much easier to recognize and interpret the messages, because by deciphering them, they would cease to be an issue. The subconscious would no longer be trying to talk to you in this way and the pain, whether physical or emotional, could ease and disappear. The question then becomes, how do we figure out what the subconscious is communicating to us?
There are many ways to communicate with the subconscious mind. I have mentioned several different methods already in previous blogs. Mainly communicating with the subconscious is about listening, listening to what it is trying to tell you. Remember that the subconscious mind communicates through pictures, metaphors, and emotions. The more in tune you are with yourself, how you feel, and why, the easier it will be to decipher the messages.
One way to tune in to the meaning behind the messages is to simply ask. This might seem too simple or feel weird at first. However, you can really ask the emotion or physical issue why it is there and what it is trying to tell you. You may be really surprised with the messages that you get back. When you ask questions in this way do not actively seek out the answer or use the logical brain to try to reason things out. Instead, after posing the question, sit in silence and allow the answer to present itself. The first answer is likely the correct one and it is important that you do not filter or dismiss anything that comes up.
After you have gotten a response, you can continue the conversation by asking what you can do to address whatever the issue is and to alleviate the distress you are feeling. Do not be surprised if a compromise is requested or if you are asked to do something or to quit doing something to get relief from the issue. It is important that if you agree to a compromise that you follow through with it, not doing so can create distrust with yourself and will very likely bring back the distress.
Remember that the subconscious communicates in symbols and metaphors so these can be used to your advantage when addressing physical and emotional discomfort. For example, if your back is hurting and upon talking to yourself about it you realize that you feel like you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders then the answer to alleviating the back pain may be to relieve some of that burden by setting boundaries, saying no to some of your commitments, or asking for help rather than finding some kind of external way to help your back such as pain reliever. That may help temporarily but it will not be a permanent fix.
Another approach to working out physical and emotional issues that are forms of communication with the subconscious mind is through guided relaxation or hypnosis. These are wonderful ways to work with the subconscious because they help the conscious mind to relax or go to sleep so that the subconscious mind can be worked with directly. Then metaphors and symbolism can be used to work out issues quickly and at a very deep level.
